1985: Reinventing retail at Horton Plaza
In the new, 1980s-era service economy, American retail became a motor of urban renewal. Named in tribute to the city’s founding father, Horton Plaza is a brave and ground-breaking mall development in the heart of downtown. Its playful and energetic layout with diagonal divisions and Italian-style piazzas, were a bid to find a mass retail formula that made sense for city centers. It broke the mold yet became the template, and it makes sense that today it’s become home to the imaginative, destination-retail giant Westfield.
